Amalfi Coast on a budget

Your ultimate Amalfi Coast honeymoon guide

Where to fly for the Amalfi Coast

The closest airport for the Amalfi Coast is Naples International Airport, located 61 kilometers away from the magical Positano.

Depending on where you choose to stay and how you plan to get around, you can spend anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours on the road from the airport to your hotel.

Driving to Positano is possible in around 1.5 hours.

How to get to the Amalfi Coast

Depending on where you choose to stay, by landing at the Naples International Airport, you can go:

  • BY TRAIN: Take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples Central to Sorrento (roughly one hour ride) and then hop on a bus or ferry to your final destination of the Amalfi Coast. Tickets from Naples to Sorrento cost EUR 3.60;
  • BY CAR: rent a car and pick it up from the airport in Naples and drive your way towards the Amalfi Coast; my go-to car rental company is always Discover Cars. It is a great aggregator that will help you find and book the best option for renting a car during your trip, helping you save up to 70% on your car rental. They have a pretty good cancellation policy that would give you options in case your flight or travel plans change. You will most probably need a car to get to most of these places, especially if you want to keep a schedule. Get your best offers here!
  • TRANSFER: arrange for a shuttle transfer – most of the hotels in Positano might offer this kind of service; of course, when you rent an apartment of Airbnb that option would possibly not be available. You will find plenty of options for private transfers from Naples airport to Positano or other places on the Amalfi Coast.

Because you will, after all, be on your honeymoon, I strongly suggest renting a car or booking a private transfer. Even if you choose to save on other things, getting from the airport to your hotel easily should be a priority.

When to go for your honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast

While you might be tempted to plan your vacation for the peak season, I encourage you to go earlier or a bit later.

That doesn’t mean you won’t have nice weather, however by traveling during April, May, September, or October, you will take advantage of the perfect time. Not only the weather will be nice, but prices will also be a bit more affordable, and places won’t be as packed as during July or August.

Where to stay for your honeymoon – best honeymoon resorts Amalfi Coast

Choosing the right hotel for your honeymoon might be the biggest decision you’ll have to make.

That being said, on the Amalfi Coast, and particularly in places like Positano or Capri Island, there are some of the most beautiful luxury hotels you can dream of. Not only do they have stunning designs and facilities, but they are also located in small villas where you can enjoy privacy.

On top of that, services here are way beyond 5*.

With plenty of Amalfi Coast luxury honeymoon hotels to choose from, here are a few of my favorite ones.

Le Sirenuse, Positano

where to stay in Positano

One of the most iconic places in Positano, and maybe the most photogenic as well. You can’t get more central than this because you will be only steps away from the heart of the village and minutes away from the beach.

Home to one of the most famous bars in Positano, they also feature an oyster bar and a Michelin-starred restaurant.

All rooms have private balconies, and by staying here you will have access to their infinity pool, hammam, and fitness center.

I dream of staying for at least one night at this stunning hotel, and a honeymoon or a special anniversary could be just the perfect occasion.

The ultimate choice for your honeymoon would be the Junior suite with a sea view, offering one of the most impressive views in Positano.

Il San Pietro di Positano

Luxury hotels in Positano

Although this hotel is set a little bit outside of Positano, they do offer tons of advantages for staying here.

A stunningly beautiful 5* hotel with a vibrant and luxurious interior design, a private beach so you won’t have to worry about the crowds, and a fitness center you will have access to. You will also have access to a state-of-the-art SPA and an outdoor pool.

Additionally, here you will also find a Michelin-star restaurant that is almost always fully booked, with a terrace overlooking the colorful houses and the sea.

Don’t worry about traveling to and from the center of town, because the hotel has a free shuttle bus available for their guests.

From your Junior suite, you will have a sea view directly from your bed and even from your bathtub.

Hotel Villa Cimbrone, Ravello

You might never get the chance to stay in a castle, moreover in a castle on the Amalfi Coast, so take the chance for your honeymoon and book that stunning room at Villa Cimbrone.

One of the most famous hotels in the whole Mediterranean, this place dates back to the 12th century and was for many years the go-to for celebrities, intellectuals, and aristocracy.

At this villa hotel, you will have access to a private outdoor pool, panoramic gardens from where you will get to see the most famous coastal landscape, and even a private helicopter pad.

You can choose to stay in the honeymoon suite with frescoes ceiling and sea view or the superior suite with terrace and sea view.

Hotel Punta Tragara, Capri

The best hotel in Marina Piccola Bay on the island of Capri, offering rooms with stunning sea views or garden views.

Relax at the outdoor heated pool, or have your hair done for the night out at the hairdresser salon in the wellness area.

If you are looking for an easily reached hotel, this might not be your top choice since it is set very remotely.

Amalfi Coast honeymoon itinerary and things to do

Depending on how long you plan to stay on the Amalfi Coast for your honeymoon, you can plan for the perfect itinerary.

Check out my 7 days on the Amalfi Coast itinerary for a great option for one week of exploring the Italian Riviera.

If, however, you have more or less time to spend in the region and want some special activities, here are a few romantic things to do on the Amalfi Coast on your honeymoon.

Go on a sunset cruise

Enjoy the sunset in one of the world’s most stunning places from the privacy of your private boat, on a private sunset cruise

Many such tours come with beverages and snacks included, and you can even go for a swim close to one of the most famous spots between Amalfi and Capri, Li Galli private islands, and an underwater nature reserve.

Choose from tons of options for private cruises here!

Cooking class or wine tour

Learn how to make pasta or other delicious dishes from this part of Italy, in a cooking class.

A cooking class with a wine-tasting experience is just the thing you will enjoy. A private sommelier will tell you all the secrets of Italian wines, and how to pair them with food.

On top of that, you’ll learn how to make eggplant parmigiana, one of my favorite dishes, homemade pasta, and a local dessert.

See more about the tour here!

Of course, there are plenty of other cooking classes to choose from. You can bake the perfect crispy Italian pizza in Sorrento, learn how to make that delicious Italian gelato, or learn how to make pasta.

Choose from all the amazing options you can find here!

Hike on the Amalfi Coast

On the days when you prefer to be active, go for a hike and take in some of the most amazing landscapes the eyes can see.

The Path of The Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) is the most famous hike on the Amalfi Coast, linking Bomerano to Nocelle and taking you on a 6.5 kilometers walk.

Since both villages are above sea level, there isn’t much climbing involved, and the hike is moderate. However, come prepared with plenty of water and something to cover your head when choosing a sunny summer day for the hike.

Another option worth considering is the Sentiero dei Limoni ( the Path of the Lemons).

The path linking Maiori and Minori, passing through the Torre village.

This street used to be in the past one of the most popular ones mainly because the local lemon producers used to use it, hence the name it has today.

If you choose to visit the Amalfi Coast during spring all the way to the beginning of summer, by going on a walk on this path you can witness the harvesting of those famous Amalfi lemons.

Rent a luxury or an antique car and drive along the coast

What would you say about driving a convertible Aston Martin, Ferrari, or Bentley on the winding roads that link Salerno to Sorrento?

At Europe Luxury Cars you can choose from hundreds of luxury car options, and get the car of your dreams for one day or for one week. This would definitely be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you can also schedule a honeymoon photo session to create a memory that will last forever.

Flytographer has been featured everywhere from The New York Times to Martha Stewart Weddings and has been called “The Future of Travel Photography” by Conde Nast Traveler and “The #1 Gift for Travelers” by Forbes.

Choose the luxury car of your dreams here!

Another option is to go on a private vintage Fiat 600 tour. You won’t be the one driving the car, but you will be able to relax and enjoy this stunning UNESCO World Heritage area of Italy. See more about the tour here!

Visit the Amalfi Villages

Airbnb Sorrento Italy

Positano is not the only enchanting destination on the Amalfi Coast and you won’t want to miss seeing all the other villages, each with its own flavor.

Visit the Duomo di Sant’Andrea in Amalfi, go local in Atrani, spend a day at the beach in Maiori or Cetara, stroll through the garden of Villa Rufolo in Ravello, enjoy the hidden gem of Marina di Praia beach in Praiano with its beachside restaurants and colorful fishing boats, buy some vibrant ceramics souvenirs in Vietri sul Mare.

Don’t be afraid to get lost and let yourself discover some of the most hidden places on the Amalfi Coast.

Spend some time at the beach

Amalfi beach

While there are many other destinations in Italy perfect for a beach holiday, you will find plenty of small beaches along the Amalfi Coast as well.

It is true that you shouldn’t expect sandy beaches, but most of them have sunbeds you can rent for the day and have a picturesque background.

You can go to one of the following beaches, or rent a car and explore on your own:

  • Maiori
  • Vietri sul Mare
  • Marina Grande in Positano – relatively small and crowded
  • Santa Croce in Amalfi – a bit wider than the one in Positano, but still relatively small
  • Marina di Cetara
  • Spiaggia di Cauco in Erchie
  • Spiaggia Cavallo Morto (don’t judge it by its name, please)
  • Spiaggia dei Limoni

Blue Grotto and Capri private tour

Sail for a few hours all the way to the picturesque island of Capri. On the way there, stop and swim in one of the bluest waters you’ll see in Italy, explore some famous grottos, take a picture with the Punta Carena Lighthouse, and admire authentic Italian architecture at Villa Malaparte.

Limoncello Making and lunch with a lemon base

The lemons on the Amalfi Coast have something special about them, and they are the base for one of the most delicious liquors produced in Italy: limoncello.

Learn how to make it yourself and taste it with a 5-6 course meal with regional food, lemon beer, and limoncello.

Go on a wine tasting tour

Wine and Italy are almost synonyms, that’s why you won’t want to skip a wine tasting on your honeymoon.

Visit one of the leading wineries in southern Italy, at the Feudi di San Gregorio estate, with your own private driver guide. Learn about the process of winemaking, the history of the villa, visit the cellars and taste wine with delicious food at the restaurant.

Romantic restaurants Amalfi Coast

Personally, I think it’s hard to go wrong when it comes to food in Italy. They love their food and know how to cook it so that you will be left wanting more.

For your honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast, you will most certainly look for restaurants with a view, where you can enjoy a romantic dinner. Luckily, I’ve gathered a few options here, to make your planning easier.

C’era una volta restaurant in Positano has delicious food, stunning views, and good prices.

Il Ritrovo in the small town of Montepertuso just above Positano is another great option.

The restaurant of Hotel Costa Diva in Praiano is almost torn out of movies, with a terrace filled with lemon trees and sea views.

La Taglia restaurant in Montepertuso has not only a great view but also great service and delicious food with ingredients from their garden. They can also take you from your location and back.

La Sponda restaurant at Le Sirenuse hotel offers that view that we all dream of, along with some dishes you will never forget.

Ristorante Torre Normana in Maiori is set in a 13th-century Norman tower, by the sea, and it’s a corner of paradise perfect for any special occasion.

Da Paolino in Capri is set in a charming lemon grove and is the go-to place for many celebrities from around the world.

Optional itineraries

Rome and Amalfi Coast honeymoon

Linking Rome and the Amalfi Coast together for your honeymoon would be a great idea, especially when you have at least 2 weeks to spend exploring.

It might be easier to land in Rome because the airport services so much more flights than the one in Naples, and since you are there you could at least spend 2 days exploring Rome. While I’m not saying this is enough to get to see most of what the city has to offer when you plan your days you can easily manage to see the most important attractions.

From Rome, take the train or rent a car and make your way towards Naples.

By train, you can make as little as 1 hour when you book the fast train (frecciarossa), 2 hours by intercity, or 3 hours by regional train which is also the cheapest. Check ticket prices and train options here!

By car, depending on the route, traffic, and how many stops you make along the way, it can take you anywhere between 2 and 3 hours to drive from Rome to Naples.

I would suggest spending at least 1 or 2 days in Naples so you can not only see the town but also easily go on day trips to Ischia island or Procida – the most colorful islands in Italy.

From there, make your way to the Amalfi Coast and follow the above instructions.

Tuscany and Amalfi coast honeymoon

We all know Tuscany might be one of the most romantic areas in Italy, thus linking it together with the Amalfi Coast should be a great idea for a honeymoon you will never forget.

For such a trip, you can choose to land in Florence, although the airport might not serve so many international flights like the one in Rome or even Milan

From Milan, you can take the fast train and be in Florence in less than 2 hours. Spend at least a few days here and go on different day trips and tours: see the colorful Cinque Terre on a day trip, visit Sienna, the charming Chianti Hills with countless wine cellars and vineyards, the small walled village of San Gimignano, and even Pisa with its famous leaning tower. See more options here!

As you’re done with Florence, hop on the train and make your way to Naples. The fast train will get you there in around 3 hours.
