Choose the Best Town to Stay on the Amalfi Coast

Last Updated on May 27, 2024 by Ingrid & Alex

A vacation on the Amalfi Coast should be on anyone’s bucket list, but choosing the best town to stay in can prove to be challenging. I should know since I’ve already visited the region countless times.

Many people might think of the Amalfi Coast as only Positano or the charming island of Capri. However, there are many more villages you can choose to stay in.

Depending on your budget and the length of your stay, you might look for an accommodation type. On the other hand, if you are traveling with your friends, significant other, or family, you might be looking for a different kind of place.

Rest assured, by the end of this post, you will be able to make a perfect choice. I have gathered some of the most beautiful hotels, apartments, and villas in one place from all the Italian Riviera villages.

As someone who loves Italy, I can easily say the Amalfi Coast might be one of the most beautiful regions in the country.

Summary of the best town to stay in on the Amalfi Coast

Just look at the map to understand the location of each town more efficiently on and around the Amalfi Coast.

Remember that the closest airport to the Amalfi Coast is Naples. From there, you can either take the train to Sorrento and the bus further on the coast, rent a car, or book a private transfer.

If you need help creating an itinerary, we have a great 7-Day Amalfi Coast itinerary option here. It might help you better plan for your vacation.

Other things worth knowing when choosing the best town to stay in Amalfi Coast:

If you plan to travel by boat or ferry, stay in Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Cetara, Minori, or Salerno. They all have connections and will easily take you to Capri or other places.

Sorrento and Salerno have train stations. You have direct train options from Rome to Salerno or Naples to Sorrento.

SITA Bus operates buses linking Sorrento to Salerno. They have stops in all the smaller towns along the coast, and you can buy daily tickets.

Driving from one village to the other is not impossible, but finding parking spaces during the peak tourist season is both challenging and expensive.

The best time to visit is always during the shoulder season – March to June or September to early November.

Sorrento – the best place to stay for connectivity

Sorrento

Sorrento is a great option for those seeking a bigger city with excellent budget accommodation.

It is easily reached by train, bus, or car from Naples. On top of that, you have plenty of options to get from Sorrento to Positano or any other village on the Amalfi Coast in less than 1 hour.

There are plenty of apartment-style accommodation options, but outside the city, you can also find beautiful villas for a larger family.

Another reason why you could choose to stay in Sorrento is the fact that you have plenty of activity options.

From Sorrento, it is easy to reach Herculaneum, Vesuvius, and the islands of Capri or Ischia.

Additionally, beach lovers can access a few beaches in and around Sorrento.

The best accommodation options in Sorrento

Grand Hotel Aminta

Great all-Italian traditional food, beautiful pool with free-of-charge towels, and incredible views.

This would be my choice no matter when I go on vacation in Sorrento. While it is not located in the city center, it offers a convenient free shuttle bus to the city center

Moreover, when traveling by car, you will have free on-site parking.

Many guests will enjoy the delicious food served at the hotel’s restaurant.

Hotel Palazzo Guardati

This incredible central location features a rooftop pool and killer views.

You are only a short walk from the port or the train station, ideal for a more active vacation.

That being said, I wouldn’t choose it when traveling by car because you will have to pay an extra daily fee.

However, it is the perfect option for traveling as a couple or with the family since it also has rooms for 4 people.

Villa Fanella

Villa Fanella

This whole apartment is set between Sorrento and Positano, and it has a terrace with sunset views. You will have privacy, and it is ideal for a more extended stay.

You might need a car to stay here, but it will all be worth it because you are 10 kilometers from the center of Positano and 15 minutes from Sorrento.

Pearl House

This is a spotless apartment for those who prefer having a whole place on vacation.

I always choose apartments when traveling for a more extended period. It offers access to the kitchen and helps us save a bit by having breakfast at home.

The new apartment is modernly furnished, has a small balcony with a nice view, and is only 6 minutes away from the beach.

Positano – maybe the most beautiful town on the Amalfi Coast

Vacanta in Positano Italia: 5 days in Amalfi Coast

Positano might be one of the most beautiful destinations in Italy. A place like no other that attracts thousands of people every day in peak season.

Red, pink, yellow, and blue buildings nestled on the top of the hill welcome you to picturesque Positano.

Make the best choice of accommodation, and you will wake up to one of the most stunning views you could wish for.

Whether you are traveling for your honeymoon, traveling with your family, or want to stay on the Amalfi Coast on a budget, there will be something for everyone.

Because I could talk on and on about Positano, I strongly encourage you to read the comprehensive guide for where to stay in Positano.

But if you don’t want to read a whole new guide, here are my top picks for accommodation in Positano.

The best accommodation options in Positano

Il San Pietro di Positano

Luxury hotels in Positano

Although this hotel is set slightly outside of Positano, they offer many advantages for staying here.

A stunning 5* hotel with a vibrant and luxurious interior design.

They offer access to a private beach, so you won’t have to worry about the crowds. On top of that, guests have access to a fitness center and a state-of-the-art SPA with an outdoor pool.

Additionally, here you will find a Michelin-starred restaurant with a terrace overlooking the colorful houses and the sea. Know that the restaurant is almost always fully booked!

Traveling to and from the town center is no problem; the hotel offers a free shuttle bus.

From your Junior suite, you will have a sea view directly from your bed and even from your bathtub.

Alcione Residence

where to stay in Positano

It is a family-run hotel with a great location and stunning views. Even though you will be centrally located, the rooms are not too noisy.

Rooms are colorful, have AC, large terraces, and some even have a kitchen.

Make sure to book way in advance, because they have only a few rooms.

Positano Holiday House

I would stay here for the view that comes with such an affordable price tag.

Also, this is a big apartment with two rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a washing machine for when you spend a more extended vacation on the Amalfi Coast.

Are you still unsure if staying in Sorrento or Positano is better for your vacation in Italy? Don’t worry; we have an in-depth guide and comparison for the two destinations. You can read it here.

Praiano – just outside of Positano, but on a budget

Twenty-five minutes away from Positano, offering the same breathtaking views, you’ll find the small, low-key Praiano.

There are colorful houses perched on the hill, apartments, and hotels with endless blue views, terraces with mosaic tables, and vivid flowers. In addition, it is close to the main road linking all the villages on the coast.

If you want a relaxing holiday, choose to stay in Praiano, and don’t plan on a packed itinerary.

Of course, you will have access to public transportation, and if you choose to rent a car, it will be easy to travel around.

By the way, we recommend Discover Cars for renting a car on the Amalfi Coast. It is an aggregator that can help you save up to 70% on your car rental. Additionally, it has a great cancellation policy. Get your best offers here!

The best accommodation options in Praiano

Il Giardino Dei Limoni

As I write this post, I’m looking for accommodation, and this villa with apartments has immediately caught my attention.

That terrace is stunning, and I could imagine myself working or simply enjoying strong Italian coffee with that view.

Just a 1-minute walk from the beach and close to a bus stop, you cannot get a better location than this.

Guests enjoyed staying in this less popular village because they could skip the crowds.

Malú Apartments – Infinity sea view

A big apartment with three bedrooms is the perfect choice when traveling with your family or a larger group of friends.

The interior staircase with colorful mosaic is picture-perfect, while the terrace is where you will spend most of your time.

Another point of interest is the window next to the bathtub, from which you can enjoy the immense blue while relaxing.

The apartment has air conditioning, and the hotel has a restaurant where you can enjoy delicious local dishes.

Grand Hotel Tritone

It is an impressive hotel for your honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast or any other special occasion.

With its own private beach, two pools with stellar vires, a wine cellar, and an outstanding staff, you simply cannot go wrong when choosing to stay here.

Some rooms have large terraces with sunbeds, while others have jacuzzies by the window.

Stay by the beach in Maiori or Vietri sul Mare

Amalfi Coast on a budget

The beaches in Vietri sul Mare or Maiori are the best on the Amalfi Coast.

Vietri sul Mare (or the small villages above it) is a less popular destination for tourists outside Italy. Thus, you won’t find the crowds of Positano or Amalfi.

Maiori is another popular destination with Italians. It has some delicious restaurants and is the perfect place to go with kids.

On my second trip to the region, I stayed in Vietri, and I loved it. Even though getting to Positano could be a bit challenging during the peak season, the price we paid for the room was just right for the view we got.

On our recent month on the coast, we spent days on the beach in Vietri. You can stay on the public beach, without getting charged for anything. Or stay on the private beach, lined with sun beds and changing rooms.

In our experience, this beach was the cheapest on the coast.

The best accommodation options in the region

Mareterè

Tucked away on one of the narrow streets in Vietri, this is a B&B that offers nice rooms and gorgeous views.

The beach is not very far away, and the city center is only a few minutes walk.

Moreover, a coffee shop and a supermarket are right next to the B&B.

Starhost – La Casa al Duomo

A colorful apartment in the center of Vietri sul Mare.

The location is quiet, private, and a 5-minute walk from all the shops, eateries, and bars.

Villa Carosino

Located in the city center yet offering a breathtaking view, this villa offers different types of rooms. Prices are decent for what they offer, and breakfast is included.

If you choose to stay here, you must walk around 15 minutes downhill to get to the beach. However, you will be next to the Villa Comunale (public park).

Una Volta

accommodation on the amalfi coast

Rooms with bathtubs by the windows in authentic designs offer delicious breakfasts.

The hotel is located in Cava de’ Tirreni, 2.5 kilometers from Marina di Vietri Beach, one of the nicest beaches on the Amalfi Coast. We stayed in the city during our month-long vacation and loved its local authentic vibe. But also its proximity to all of the main attractions on the Amalfi Coast.

The hotel offers free parking if you rent a car and travel around. That means you won’t have to worry about finding or paying for a space.

Stay in Capri for an unforgettable escape and island vibes

Capri Island is one of the most picturesque destinations in the Italian Riviera. It has been a favorite of the rich and famous throughout history.

One cannot visit Capri without falling in love with the landscape, luxurious restaurants, and hotels, as well as the island’s vibe.

It’s no wonder celebrities choose to spend their vacations there and even have their favorite restaurants.

When you choose to stay more than one day in Capri, the best area to stay in is Capri Town or Anacapri

From here, reaching all of the island’s essential attractions will be easy, and you will be close to the main restaurants and bars.

Moreover, shopping lovers will love it here because they will also be within walking distance of some of the coolest and most authentic shops. No matter if you are looking for souvenirs to bring back home or something just for you.

The best accommodation in Capri

Hotel San Michele

It offers one of the most breathtaking views from its terrace and some of the rooms.

Here, you will have access to a great pool and delicious breakfast.

They also offer transfers from the port to the hotel. Trust me when I say that it is essential because you don’t want to climb the hill with or without luggage.

This is also a great option when traveling with kids or teenagers.

Hotel La Palma Capri, an Oetker Collection Hotel

Stay here if you want to be in the center of it all, steps away from the main square in Capri – La Piazzetta Square.

You can access the panoramic rooftop terrace, a SPA and wellness center, and an outdoor pool here. This hotel is mainly appreciated by couples.

Hotel Quisisana

This fabulous hotel is located in the center of Capri Town. Previous guests felt welcomed and at home and appreciated how the staff treated them.

Breakfast is also excellent, accompanied by a violinist who sets the scene for a beautiful and tranquil experience in Capri.

Villa Ceselle

Located in a traditional Italian villa with a stunning garden and a jacuzzi on the terrace.

You will be 10 minutes away from the main shopping area and close to the cable car.

Guests enjoyed the privacy and spaciousness of the rooms, the swimming pool, and the villa’s location close to the bus stop.

Naples – the best town to stay on the Amalfi Coast if you want to travel around

10 days Italy itinerary

Two cities in one, Naples is a mix of luxury and breathtaking natural beauty, with darker areas.

Strolling on the narrow streets, watching the chipped walls, one might be transported to one of the most beautiful books set in Italy, “My Brilliant Friend“.

Choosing the best place to stay in Naples could be challenging when visiting for the first time. But with the right information, you will love the city.

Staying in Naples will allow you to easily visit places like Herculaneum, Pompei, Procida Island, Capri Island, Caserta Palace, Paestum, and the Amalfi Coast.

While we stayed close to the train station and the city center during our trip, I recommend staying in that area only if you travel on a budget.

Choose to stay in Spaccanapoli, the Historical Center, or Lungomare Caracciolo. These are all better areas in town, from which you can easily get to the train station and most of the important attractions.

The best accommodation options in Naples

BW Signature Collection Hotel Paradiso

I saw this hotel at someone on Facebook, and I fell in love with it immediately. The views are breathtaking, and the hotel’s interior design is luxurious and all-Italian.

Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples will greet you throughout the day from the poolside, the lobby, and the balcony in your room.

Guests loved the hotel’s service and delicious breakfast, and they believe the hotel’s name does it justice.

Daily Napoli – Lungomare

I saved this hotel as one of my favorites when I returned to Naples. It is perfectly located by the sea and only a 6-minute walk from Castel dell’Ovo.

They mostly have rooms for two people, but they also have one type of room for four adults, making it a good choice when you travel with friends or family.

The interior design is colorful and cozy. Each room also provides luggage storage space, air conditioning, a dishwasher, and a coffee machine.

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast for the first time: Amalfi

3 days on the Amalfi Coast itinerary

By staying in Amalfi you will have access to the beach, you will be in the middle of the coast, and have the option to take the boat or the bus.

That means you can easily visit most of the towns on the Amalfi Coast and relax.

The city of Amalfi is carved inside the mountain and is packed with small shops, cafes, and restaurants. Walking around the narrow street and shopping for souvenirs is a pleasure.

The best place to stay in Amalfi

La Bambagina

“Your window on Amalfi life” as they call themselves, is the right place to be when you want to stay in the heart of the city.

Close to the beach, the Amalfi Cathedral, and the main square in town, the hotel offers nice rooms and a delicious continental breakfast.

Anantara Convento di Amalfi

Set in a perfect location, with outstanding views and 5* services, this could be a perfect choice for your honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast.

The property has a large garden, the rooms have terraces with sweeping views, and the infinity pool carved into the mountain is the cherry on the cake.

Of course, it all comes with a price tag, but it will surely be worth it.

Hotel Villa Felice Relais

Choose to spend time on the terrace or walk the 3-minute distance to the beach when staying at this hotel.

Enjoy your breakfast on the terrace and book the half-board option when you don’t want to worry about where to have lunch or dinner.

All rooms come equipped with air conditioning and a balcony or sea view.

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast for honeymoon: Ravello

Ravello Amalfi Coast

A bit remote, set on the hilltop, Ravello has always drawn celebrities and royalty alike. While you won’t have access to the sea, most hotels have private pools with stunning views.

However, that doesn’t mean you won’t find affordable accommodation options in Ravello.

The town is one of our favorites on the Amalfi Coast, mainly because it offers some of the best views.

The best accommodation options in Ravello

Hotel Villa Cimbrone

You might never get to stay in a castle, especially one on the Amalfi Coast. So take the opportunity for your honeymoon and book that stunning room at Villa Cimbrone.

One of the most famous hotels in the Mediterranean, this place dates back to the 12th century and was for many years the go-to for celebrities, intellectuals, and aristocracy.

At this villa hotel, you can access a private outdoor pool, panoramic gardens from which you can see the most famous coastal landscape and even a private helicopter pad.

You can stay in the honeymoon suite, which has a frescoed ceiling and a sea view, or the superior suite, which has a terrace and a sea view.

Casa Dolce Casa

A hotel with a beautiful brand-new design, a large terrace, and stunning sea views. By taking the right stairway next to it, you can easily get to Ravello’s main square in a matter of minutes.

Choose to stay here when traveling by car, because the hotel offers free parking, so you will have one less thing to worry about.

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast for the local vibe: Salerno

Salerno Lungomare

Salerno might not be your first option when looking for the best place to stay on the Amalfi Coast, but you might want to consider it.

Directly linked by fast train to Rome, where you can get to in less than 2 hours, by sea, with bus and boats linking it to the rest of the towns on the Amalfi Coast, and much more.

Prices for accommodation in Salerno are more affordable than in other villages along the coastline, even Sorrento.

Salerno is a city, so there are plenty of things to do, and you will be close to restaurants, supermarkets, and more.

We particularly loved to stroll on the seafront and have our coffee with a view. The old town is charming and packed with traditional restaurants.

The best place to stay in Salerno

Roof Garden

The most charming feature of this Bed and breakfast is its rooftop terrace, which offers a charming view over the city.

All rooms are modernly furnished and have a small patio.

Armonia B&B

best place to stay in Salerno

Nine minutes away from the beach, with a shared lounge and rooms with a terrace.

The view from the balcony, overlooking Salerno and the sea, is incredible. On top of that, guests rated it as one of the most comfortable beds they slept in while traveling.
